If you live within the City of Cape Town you can pay vehicle licence fees online through an electronic funds transfer (EFT).
Follow the steps below:
Step 1: You will need to register as a user on the e-Services portal if you aren’t registered already. These are the following documents that will be required from you; proof of residence and a copy of your ID. They will need to be used to verify your info you provide on creating your account on the portal.
Step 2: Activate the vehicle licensing renewal option and fill in the relevant information. You will thereafter be sent the City’s banking details and your specific deposit reference number via email. You will also receive a date by which payment must be paid.
Step 3: Using these banking details, and your specific deposit reference number, you can make an EFT payment directly from your bank’s website.
Note: This online payment facility is for vehicle licences only and should not be used for the payment of rates, traffic fines and other municipal accounts.
Take note of the following:
- Applications for vehicle licence renewals should be made a month prior to the expiry date.
- You should receive your licence within fourteen working days after the payment has been received by the appropriate authorites in charge. However, they make use of the South African Postal Services to deliver all our licences and there may be unforeseen delays.
- Should you not receive your disc before then, contact the Call Centre on 086 0103 089.
- Motor dealers who need to renew motor trade plates can only do this in person at a motor vehicle licensing office.

What Car Insurance Do I Need?
Statistics prove that driving can be dangerous, and drivers should safeguard against these risks by taking out insurance to meet their needs and budget from the 3 main types:
Comprehensive vehicle insurance which although most expensive provides the best cover and protection in event of accident, theft and, damage including flooding and fire.
Third-party fire and theft that, despite being less expensive and not covering car replacement, provides cover for damage caused by fire, theft and, hijacking.
Third-party cover, usually the cheapest in the market, only covers damage to other vehicles in the accident.
Remember that your car insurance won’t cover you for:
Normal wear and tear
Intentional damage
Loss or damage should you leave South Africa’s borders without the appropriate certificate from your insurer or broker showing you have cover outside the country.
What is Comprehensive Car Insurance? Comprehensive Car Insurance Provides cover for just about any form of financial loss related to your vehicle. Provides cover for damage caused to another person and their property if you are responsible for an accident.
What is Third party fire and theft insurance? Third-party fire and theft Car Insurance

What is third party only cover? Third-party-only Car Insurance covers the damage caused to another person and their property if you are responsible for an accident. Does not provide cover if your vehicle is damaged or stolen.
