Car Licence Disc Renewals in South Africa

Important Announcement:
Vehicle licenses are renewed yearly. The extension of license renewals does not apply to those who had their license expiring from 1 January 2021 till now.

All South Africans with a learners license, drivers licence, temporary driving licence and professional driving permits that expired between 26 March 2020 and 31 December 2020 are allowed an extended validity to 31 August 2021 to renew their licences. Kindly ensure that you renew your drivers license if you fall within this bracket in SA.

Take Notice that when your drivers licence card expires it does not mean that your license to drive in South Africa is expired but rather the card which acts as proof of your ability to drive is what has expired.

And so to renew licence you have don’t have to undergo a driving license test anymore. The same applies whether your card is stolen, missing, or is near expiration.

Vehicle License Renewal Requirements

Remember: If your vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy load motor vehicle, you must obtain a roadworthiness certificate. In order to renew your vehicles licence disc you will need to take the following to your nearest licencing department or post office

  • Your ID (identity document)
  • Proof of residential address e.g. utility account. If the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit.
  • If you stay at an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your residential address
  • Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2). If you did not receive a renewal notice, complete form ALV (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle)
  • For a vehicle registered in an organisation or company’s name, bring the following:
  • Business certificate of the organisation or company
  • Identity document of proxy
  • Letter of proxy
  • Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2). If you did not receive a renewal notice, complete an Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle form (ALV).
  • Pay the licence fee specified on the notification.

How long does it take: The application is processed on the same day.

Forms to complete: The Application for motor vehicle licence (MVL1) form is available from any registering authority or selected post offices.

What is third party only cover? Third-party-only Car Insurance covers the damage caused to another person and their property if you are responsible for an accident. Does not provide cover if your vehicle is damaged or stolen.
